Happy Brains and Creativity

Sep 14, 2016Essential Oils, How to think like an artist1 comment

I have talked at length about keeping creativity flowing. As a hobby knitter, being creatively refreshed may not seem like a thing. But if you dream of being a fiber artist, or rely on your creativity for your work, the need to keep the creative ideas flowing becomes really important.

For the most part staying creative has a lot to do with nurturing your inner child and inviting your subconscious to play. Recently I have been thinking about the physical relationship between what is going on with your body and creativity. I mean your brain is an organ in your body, so it kind of makes sense that your physical well being could affect your creativity.

So today I am going to give you some of my favorite self care tips that will help keep a happy brain, and in turn help keep your creativity flowing.

Get enough sleep. This is a big one for me. I am a chronic insomniac. And young artists can be known to stay up late feeding creative impulses. But burning the candle at both ends can only get you so far. It is really so very important to let your brain reset and heal with some good old fashioned sleep. I know it seems a little simplistic. But over exerting your brain with lack of sleep is akin to over exerting muscles when they are already tired.

Meditation/yoga. Meditation and yoga can also help reset your brain much in the same way good sleep can. During meditation and yoga, you are getting out of your head and focusing on your body.

Brain food. Fish is considered brain food. not just because it contains the good oils that help keep your brain lubricated, but because fish is easy to digest. When your digestive system is taking all the the blood and oxygen to your stomach for digestion, you find yourself in a bit of a food coma. Eating light and even some light fasting will keep more oxygen available to help your brain function better. I have also found that I can thing a lot clearer when I cut down on sugar.

Supplements. There are a ton of supplements out there that can help you with healthy brain function. While many of them are geared towards seniors, I find these supplements can also help with your overall brain fitness. I am partial to diffusing essential oils to help improve my brain function. And through my favorite Young Living brand, there are several blends designed to do just that. But any supplement that helps get more oxygen to your brain is a good thing.

Brain games. I know it seems counter intuitive to use puzzles and logic games to help improve your creativity. But really creativity is not just the subconscious at play, but also find a way to manifest those ideas into form through problem solving. Problem solving involves all kinds of creativity. I find during crazy times of stress, I will go through phases of playing games on my iPad. For some reason the focused problem solving and sense of play tend to reset my brain. I find I am able to be more productive once the game phase is done.

So, my question for you…What are some of your favorite body self care tips you use to take care of your right brain? Leave me a comment below.

I walk in the woods when I can. The wildflowers/berries, trees, stumps and scents stimulate.
