When not doing the work helps you be more creative

Nov 12, 2014How to think like an artist2 comments

I am not gonna lie. I have just gotten back to the studio after an awesome lunch with my BFF. I had some good sushi, and truth be told my tummy is full and I just want to curl up and take a nap. I opened up the outline for what was going to be today’s post and stared at the screen for a full 5 minute unable to access what the hell I was going to say.

It appears that my creative writing mojo has taken the day off.

Now if you have been reading my articles lately, or following my instagram, I have been all about buckling down and doing the work. Getting into the flow. But, sometime it is just not there. And when that happens, slamming your head against a wall is just not going to make you more creative.

So, as I sat here staring at my computer realizing I was hitting a wall today, I stopped to ask myself what I needed to do to honor where I was creatively. I am thinking a nap and some stash busting weaving…nothing to intense, just playing wile watching some mindless TV

Here are a few non-creative things that you can do to clear the cobwebs and actually make you more creative…

Take a nap.

Naps are an awesome way to reset you brain. Just 20 minutes will refresh the brain. But do pay attention if you feel you need to sleep more than that. Burnout because of fatigue is real. it can lead to all kinds of illness.

Take a walk.

It is like a moving meditation. Walking even if it is just around the block gets you out of your head and into you body. Another great way to reset the creative brain.

Clean your room.

Sometimes clutter can kill your creativity. The woo-woo is it is stuck energy. The practical is it is a distraction. Either way, cleaning your creative space will not only give you a mindless activity to reset your brain, it will get your eyes on some of your supplies and inspirations you may have forgotten.

There is a fine line between needing to overcome inertia and needing to give yourself a break. It is up to you to decide where that fine line should fall. Be good to yourself and your work. Take a break if you need it. Its all good.

My Fiber Art Journal

My Fiber Art Journal

I have been keeping an art journal since I was 18. Back then I was in art school and it was my sketchbook, a requirement for all of my art classes from day one. I resisted at first, it seemed like such a frivolous task. But, I soon realized that it was key to fleshing...
